Biography

Professor Torche holds a BA from the Catholic University of Chile and an MA and PhD in Sociology from Columbia University. Her research and writing focus on social inequality and social mobility, educational disparities, and marriage and family dynamics. Her recent scholarship studies the influence of early-life exposures and circumstances –starting before birth– on individual health, development, and wellbeing using natural experiments and causal inference approaches. She was elected to the American Academy of Political and Social Sciences (AAPSS) in 2023, and to the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS) in 2020.
