The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) will hold on October 9-11 its Fortieth session [1], the most important biennial gathering of this United Nations regional organization, where ECLAC will present its proposal for a transformation to move towards a more productive, inclusive and sustainable development model in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The event will be inaugurated on Wednesday, October 9, at 2 p.m. local time in Peru (GMT -5) by Dina Boluarte Zegarra, President of Peru; Amina Mohammed, Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations (pre-recorded video); and José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs, Executive Secretary of ECLAC. Also participating will be a representative of Argentina, the country serving as Chair of the thirty-ninth session of ECLAC.

During the meeting – in which representatives from ECLAC’s 46 Member States and 14 associate members will participate, along with researchers, academics, representatives of civil society and international officials – the Commission will unveil its position document entitled Development Traps in Latin America and the Caribbean: Vital Transformations and How to Manage Them, which will be presented by ECLAC’s Executive Secretary, José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs.

In addition, a gathering of foreign ministers and senior authorities from ECLAC member countries will take place to discuss the outcomes of the Summit of the Future [2], which was held on September 22-23, 2024 in the framework of the United Nations General Assembly’s 79th session.
