Biography

Mark Brantley is a lawyer and politician from Saint Kitts and Nevis. He was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs and Aviation in February 2015.

As a lawyer, Mr. Brantley has practised extensively before the High Court and Court of Appeal and has been involved in high-end international commercial litigation. He has also appeared as an expert witness in litigation in Singapore and provided expert written testimony on aspects of Nevis law in several other proceedings internationally.

Mr. Brantley serves as Deputy Premier of the Nevis Island Administration and holds the portfolio of Minister of Tourism, Health, Culture, Youth, Sports, and Community Development. He also served as the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly of the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis (2007 – 2015).

Earlier in his career, Mr. Brantley acted as Counsel in the Legal Department of the Nevis Island Government (1995-1996), as a member of Nevis Constitutional Commission (1996), and as an Advisor on Financial Services to the Nevis Island Government (1996 to the present). He was President of the Nevis International Business Association (1997), and was made a member of the Commercial Bar Association (COMBAR) in 2009. He has been admitted to the Bar in Saint Kitts and Nevis (1994), Anguilla (1996), Grenada (2009), Antigua and Barbuda (2009) and Dominica (2010).

Mr. Brantley has received numerous awards, such as most outstanding student at the Norman Manley Law School of Jamaica (1993 and 1994) and the Michael March Memorial Prize (1994). In 1994 he was Winter Williams Commonwealth Scholar at Oxford University (1994).

In the academic sphere, Mr. Brantley has been a tutor in Constitutional and Administrative Law at the University of the West Indies (1992-1994), and a tutor in Constitutional Law and Civil Rights at the Stanford University Centre, Oxford (1995). He holds a Bachelor of Civil Law from St. Catherine’s College, Oxford, a Legal Education Certificate of Merit from Norman Manley Law School and a Bachelor of Laws from the University of the West Indies.
