Biography

Julio Santaella is a Mexican economist and currently President of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) of Mexico.

His career at the Bank of Mexico was noteworthy for the variety of posts he held: he was Executive Coordinator of the Mexican Petroleum Fund for Stabilization and Development (2014-2015), held various positions in the Central Banking Operations Support Department (2004-2011) and was a Researcher with the Governing Board Advisory Department and the Economic Research Department (2001-2003). He was previously an adviser to the International Monetary Fund (1992-1997) and Head of the Macroeconomic Policy Department of the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (1984-1987).

In the academic sphere, he has had a long career at the Autonomous Technological Institute of Mexico (ITAM), acting as Coordinator of the Centre for Applied Economics and Public Policy (2000-2001), Head of the Academic Department of Economics (1998-2000) and Deputy Director of the Centre for Economic Analysis and Research (1997). He holds a master’s degree and doctorate in Economics from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and a bachelor’s degree in Economics from ITAM.
