Biography

Juan José Gómez Camacho is a Mexican lawyer and diplomat and currently the Permanent Representative of Mexico to the United Nations.

He has held a great variety of posts in his 28 years at the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including Director General for Human Rights and Democracy, Private Secretary to the Legal Consultant, Deputy Director for International Organizations at the Department of the United Nations and Director of Border Affairs at the Department of Borders. Outside Mexico, he has been attached to the Mexican embassy in the United Kingdom, where he headed the Legal Affairs and Human Rights Section, and the Permanent Mission of Mexico to the Organization of American States (OAS), where he acted as Alternate Representative with responsibility for legal affairs, including Mexico’s legal representation at the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights.

He has formed part of or headed a large number of government delegations at international meetings or negotiations, both bilateral and multilateral, on issues as important as political affairs, human rights, telecommunications and nuclear and conventional disarmament.

Juan José Gómez Camacho has participated as an international law expert in a variety of academic events in Mexico and internationally and has written for a number of academic publications. He has been a Professor of International Treaty Law at the Ibero-American University. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Law from the Ibero-American University and holds a master’s degree in International Law from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., United States.
