Biography

Enrique Peña Nieto is a Mexican lawyer and, since 2012, the President of the United Mexican States.

He entered public service at a young age, holding various positions in the Government of the State of Mexico. He was Administration Secretary from 2000 to 2002 and State Deputy for the XIII Local District from 2003 to 2004, where he also served as Coordinator of the Parliamentary Group of the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI).

In 2005, Mr. Peña Nieto ran for the governorship of the State of Mexico. During his campaign he toured the State, listening to the people and signing notarized pledges to build public works. He thus came to serve as State Governor of the country’s largest federal entity from 2005 to 2011. He oversaw major infrastructure and public services works, as well as advances in health care. He also restructured the State of Mexico’s finances, reducing the public debt and increasing spending on works and programmes without raising taxes. At the end of his term as Governor, he announced his candidacy for the Presidency of the Republic and, following an intensive election campaign, won the national elections on 1 July 2012.

Mr. Peña Nieto holds a degree in Law from the Panamerican University and an Masters in Business Administration from the Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education (ITESM).
